Tiburon Rum is a hand crafted, aged, premium rum, from an old family owned distillery near the shores of the Caribbean Sea in Belize. Tiburon rum is a molasses base rum aged in old oak bourbon barrels. The warm climate of Belize helps to gently mature the rum so a younger rum can display some of the same appealing characteristics of a much older spirit from other places on earth. We blend rums from a variety of barrels of different ages and character and re-cask the blend for a second maturation process to allow the natural tannins to give the rum a rich golden color, smooth finish, and subtle hints of vanilla and oak. While scuba diving throughout the Caribbean, our search began for the perfect rum. We found it in an amazing place — Belize, where they still make small batches of handcrafted rum, and where the warm breezes help the rum gently reach maturity.
Today we bring you Tiburon Rum, a special rum which has been aged and blended from a variety of barrels of varying age and character. Only the finest local ingredients are used to achieve the highest quality rum, which is re-casked by Master Blenders into Kentucky Oak Bourbon Barrels for the “second maturation” to allow the natural tannins to give the rum a rich golden color, smooth finish, and subtle hints of vanilla and oak. Painkiller Cocktail Recipe
So the legend goes, the Painkiller cocktail was invented in the 1970’s in the British Virgin Islands at a bar called Soggy Dollar Bar. It was originally made with Pusser’s Rum, a type of rum made using the British Royal Navy recipe. The drink was trademarked in the 1980’s so that if it’s included on a menu, it should include the traditional Pusser’s Rum. Of course if you’re making it at home, you can use any type of aged or dark rum - we won't tell anyone! Many rum cocktails use white rum or dark rum. But the Painkiller cocktail uses a whole other category of this liquor: aged rum or golden rum! Aging rum for a few years gives it a complex flavor. Golden rum can have notes of vanilla, coconut, almond, citrus, or caramel. The aged rum that we used here was Brugal Añejo Rum. Can’t find golden or aged rum or don’t have it on hand? You can substitute dark rum and the drink will work. You can also use white rum, but it’s not quite the same for this classic drink.
